Coppell's Justin Chen - Regional Champion, State Semi-Finalst

18486127 10155382486192509 8495294123429132099 nEven with Coppell's rich tradition of excellence in tennis, it is still very difficult to reach the pinnacle event in Texas - the UIL State Championships.  Thus, it does not happen very often.  In fact, when it happens, you get your name on the CHS Tennis Center building.

But it happened again, and this time it was Justin Chen, Coppell Junior, representing the Cowboys in Class 6A Boys Singles. In College Station at the State Tournament Quarter-Finals, Justin defeated Sebastian Herrera of El Paso Franklin in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

In the State Championship Semi-Finals, Justin ran into some really stiff competition, and fell to Kevin Zhu of Pearland Dawson.  Justin earned his trip to State in fine fashion, moving through the Regional draw undefeated last week in Waco.

Justin defeated the #2 seed from Austin Anderson 6-3,6-3 in the semi-finals, and went on to defeat Houston Memorial 6-2,6-7(10-12),6-1 in the finals (a match that lasted over 3 hours), to earn the coveted title of Regional Champion, and a berth in the State Championships.

Congratulations Justin - Good Job at Regionals & State!!!

Coppell's Melissa Coburn Finishes as Regional Semi-Finaliist

DSC 0028Melissa Coburn has been a top performer for the Coppell Tennis program for four years, and she completed her great Coppell career with a finish as Regional Semi-Finalist last week at the Arlington Tennis Center.

Melissa, surprisingly unseeded after her District Championship Tourney win, showed with her play that her lack of seeding was probably an over-sight by the tournament folks.

After a split set win over Allen in the first round, Melissa kept the momentum with nice straight set win in the Quarter-Finals over the top player from Amarillo Tascosa.

This win set up a difficult match-up in the Semi-Finals against the No. 1 Seed from El Paso Coronado.

Melissa, facing the top seed who had lost only 2 total games in the first two rounds, quickly challenged the favorite.  However, even after winning twice as miany games as previous competitors, Melissa's challenge was met by the very good player from El Paso.

For some pictures of Melissa in her final Coppell tournament, go to Photo Galleries in the Media Section and click on 2016 Spring Regionals...

Congratulations Melissa!
